Facilities

The ceramics studio is in an old building, labeled as the Art Center. (It is said it was at one time the dairy for the State Mental Hospital, which is across the highway, and is now also a minimum security prison.) Our space in the building consists of three rooms on the northwest corner of the ground floor, linked by large openings, rather than doors. One room is designated for glazing, and has glaze bins and shelves, and a large sink. The other two rooms are used for all kinds of clay work, with about 10 wheels, a number of work tables, sinks in each room, and assorted shelves.

There is a separate kiln shed, which has shelves and one large gas car-kiln (a new one is to arrive in early 2001), one electric kiln which is for high temperature work, and one very small electric kiln. Outside there is a salt kiln, raku car-kiln, a small Thai style anagama kiln for wood firing, and an already dug hole in the ground for pit firing!

Below are a few pictures of the studio ; click on each image to get larger views.

A view of the row of seven Randall potter's wheels, all of which face the windows. The view has changed somewhat, as a large tree just outside (it can be seen on the right) died and has been cut down.
This is a close-up of the photo to the left, in order to show the corner of our cement wedging table. It was built by Fred twenty years ago, and still shows no signs of wear! Cement is highly recommended.
Lois Tselentis at the entry to the studio, taken a few years ago. It now has metal rails, and a cement ramp. Fred did the "Ceramics" sign as a surprise for us.
Off to the left there were two Soldner wheels when this photo was taken; they are now in the center, and the table here is against the wall; it is a far better arrangement. This view is at the end of summer school, some years ago, when all the work is on one of the worktables for critique, before going home with students.
